Dear Mr. President: At a church service on a recent Sunday morning, I had the great privilege of hearing one of your assistants, Hon. Brooks Hays, take part in a dialogue with Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, President of the Council on World Tensions. Although I am just a country lawyer, I have heard hundreds of speeches in my time and I think that this was one of the best public presentations that I have ever heard. Mr. Hays has the wit of Mark Twain, the sincerity which Cicero once said was indispensable in a speaker, and the silver tongue of F.D.R. It was no wonder, therefore, that he had every one of those people which filled that church, hanging on his every word! He has had such a rich experience and he has such a great gift in this field, that I would hope that it could be arranged for him to devote as much time as possible to filling speaking engagements, particularly for High School and College students. An additional reason why Mr. Hays can be very effective, is the fact that he possesses a very strong and sensitive spiritual character, which is what young people of today need more than anything else, in my humble opinion! I should like to add a personal word: that as a life-long Democrat, I have a tremendous admiration for you and the splendid job that you are doing, difficult and harrowing as it is, in our country and in the world today!
